This is something particularly easy to forget at the beginning of your gameplay, but certain chests/dig sites/quests reward little colored sacks or recipe books that reward a single new item of clothing or furniture or a cooking recipe. These are not automatically redeemed however, and take up a valuable slot in your Backpack, so any time you collect one, be sure to go immediately to your inventory and use it to receive the item.
